researchers discovered that, with some training, pigeons are capable of understanding the concept of mathematical values. pigeons can rank amounts from lowest to highest by pecking them on a screen. pigeons were able to successfully rank up to nine objects in order. their performance matched that of rhesus monkeys who had previously participated in the same experiment.

a fun bird fact that i hope u dont already have on here somewhere: pigeons can apparently count to 6/7. some very smart ones even to 8 iirc. source: my high-school biology teacher who tested that stuff when he was studying biology

didn’t know that!! that’s pretty awesome! i knew about Alex being able to count to 6, but wasn’t aware of pigeons. i guess it shouldn’t be a surprise given how smart they are. i’ll have to make a post on it, thanks!

the keel-billed toucan is native to south america, and is one of the largest toucans, with one of the most colorful bills in the family. they are also one of the most well-known toucan species, with many depictions in pop culture. despite their large bills which are threatening in appearance, toucans only occasionally eat meat, and tend to prefer a diet of fruit.
