When he was a baby he could stay in this position for hours and sleep in my hand.. My little common swift is now in Africa under the warm sun! I miss him so much…
What gets me is that initial pause. The bird knows this song. He knows when the drum comes in. Being able to anticipate musical rhythm is a form of intelligence very few species have, and this is the most remarkable example of it I’ve ever seen in a bird. The cockatoo knew to wait for the drums.
rhythmic awareness: a prerequisite of language evolution
Hey this is editted. But the original is WAY BETTER
this is a black palm cockatoo! they do the same kind of drumming behavior in the wild, with ‘drumsticks’ like sticks or seed pods. mostly, they do it to impress females, but sometimes there doesn’t seem to be a cause – just for fun!
Bonita is a Crested Caracara who likes to show off her intelligence, and excellent color vision! We hide food under only the pink eggs, so those are the only ones she goes after! Bonita is a rescued bird who does educational presentations at my current facility, and just a joy to work with.
