October 12, 2014 – Blue Fallow Pacific Parrotlet (Forpus Coelestis)

Requested by: when-worlds-collide96

This color mutation of the Pacific Parrotlet has red eyes and light grayish blue feathers. Males retain their wing, eye, and rump markings. Both the blue and the fallow mutations can also occur separately, leading to blue birds with dark eyes and greenish yellow birds with red eyes, respectively. Wild-type Pacific Parrotlets are native to Peru and Ecuador. They eat a variety of plant foods, including seeds, cactus, and berries.

September 6, 2014 – Pacific Parrotlet, Lesson’s Parrotlet, Celestial Parrotlet, or Pocket Parrot (Forpus coelestis)

Requested by: when-worlds-collide96

These small parrots are found in northwestern Peru and on the Pacific coast of Ecuador. They eat seeds, cactus, berries, and other plant material. Females are mostly green, while males have blue rumps and wing patches, and a darker blue streak behind their eyes. They nest in cavities in trees and fence posts, or in the abandoned nests of several other bird species. Both parents care for the chicks. Pacific Parrotlets are common in captivity, where many different color mutations have been bred.

I love these little birds. Several years ago I saw two of them at a pet store with a hatch date of September 6, I really wanted to get them, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to give them a good home at the time. Drawing this on their hatch date, I was thinking of them and hoping they’ve found someone to take good care of them.

Decembird2016 Day 6, a flightless bird. The Kakapo is the world’s heaviest parrot. It’s a nocturnal, ground-dwelling parrot that lives in New Zealand, also called the owl parrot. Its endangered and very difficult to breed in captivity as it has a habit of bonding with humans over its proposed potential mates. 2016 has sucked in almost every way but we can be delighted to know that Kakapos have had a record breeding season this year, hatching 47 chicks.
