We rescue more than large parrots. Even little finches need help!

Odette and Manuel are about 2 years old, Zebra Finches! They are looking for a home to fill with song and finch chatter. They love to sing, eat millet/herb and hop! Odette seems to be braver while Manuel loves to hang back and watch what’s going on.

Interested in taking home this beautiful couple? We require an adoption application to be found: http://papayagorescuehouse.org/adoptables/

HIDING OUT

This hen has found the one spot in the yard (that I know of) that is inaccessible by humankind. A corner that is 3 meters down (9′), 3 meters in (9′), and about 20 cm wide (9″). She has 8 eggs under her. Outside of the chain link fencing there’s a 10cm gap (4″) then a brick wall on both sides. to the right is a building. She’s in there good. I’m worried about any chicks that hatch as the journey out could be perilous. There’s a big ground squirrel nest halfway in, and they will kill chicks, they will also steal/eat the eggs. So far the hen’s done well protecting them. We keep filling in the opening to the den, and hopefully the hen will eventually emerge with chicks in a way that we can safely shepherd them to safety.

Tuesday night I noticed the eggs hatched. We tried to figure out how to get them safely out of the narrow slot given the danger of predators. Shawn suggested we put a cat carrier with the door open fill it with hay and water. I thought this was a S-T-U-P-I-D idea but lacking a better solution decided to give it a try. Stupid brilliant as it turned out, when I arrived in the morning the hen had actually moved the flock into the box on her own. 🙂 8 cute little peanuts. They are now safely ensconced and soon to move to a better set of digs.
