Violet Starling (Cinnyricinclus leucogaster) with feather detail. Iridescence in bird feathers is due to microstructures of the feather refracting light like a prism. Fossil evidence has shown that birds have had these structures in their feathers for at least 40 million years.

GO-AWAY-BIRD
(Corythaixoides)

‘gavball34′. 2012. “White-bellied Go-away bird
Samburu County, Kenya

Grey, white-bellied and bare-faced are the three species of go-away-bird that comprise the turaco genus Corythaixoides. Don’t worry, they didn’t get their name because they don’t like company; it’s actually onomatopoeia of certain calls they produce (sounding like kweh or g’way), but if you ever get the chance to hear one I can’t promise that they really don’t want to you clear off!
