I used to be scared of geese, but now that I’m older and wiser I’ve realized they’re just doing what they can to survive and I now have a healthy respect for them.
has anyone seen a joke post before? out of curiosity?
in all seriousness, yes, before someone sends me another explanation of why this post is idiotic and i’m encouraging the death of all native species, i am completely aware of the problems some of the birds on the list cause. i’m very aware they are invasive, disturb native birds, etc.
these birds also have great qualities. starlings are incredibly intelligent and can learn to mimic words. pigeons were cherished by people for years before they fell out of fashion and became ‘pests’. they were used in war as message carriers; some pigeons even received medals from the british and french governments. the aggressive behavior of geese is part of why they’re such great parents; they won’t allow anything or anyone to harm their babies.
something else i know is that hating them accomplishes absolutely nothing. these birds often have occupied the places they are invasive to for hundreds of years. in the case of the house sparrow, there have been attempts to eradicate them that just…fail. these birds have sheer numbers and are great at surviving. hating them won’t make them go anywhere. so don’t be a jerk to them if you see them on the street! don’t kick a pigeon or throw stuff at geese. just move along and leave them to do their own thing! that was the only point of the post. they have no fault in being invasive. we introduced them; we can take responsibility for their impacts on native ecosystems.
instead of being mad at birds that aren’t leaving, do some things to help your native birds. put out nest boxes, invest in feeders that are inaccessible to large invasive birds, make your windows visible to birds.
essentially, what i’m trying to say is; they are all really good birds.
