I wanted to follow up my “Winter Birds” Christmas card with Spring Birds, but spring coincided with enough life madness that I missed it. Early summer is still alive with breeding birds, though! Maybe I’ll be on the ball (like a goldfinch) and get out a card with fall migrants.
THIS CROW UNDERSTANDS WATER DISPLACEMENT. WHY THE HELL DO I HAVE TO BE TOLD EVERY YEAR BY A TEACHER HOW WATER DISPLACEMENT WORKS. DO THEY THINK I’M LESS INTELLIGENT THAN A CROW? I’M DONE.
Crows discovered the principle of displacement in the third century BC, when the philosopher Awkimedes, upon noticing the level of his bird bath rose in proportion with the amount of his body that was submerged, reportedly exclaimed “EURECAW!” and flew through the streets of Athens shouting his discovery.
has anyone seen a joke post before? out of curiosity?
in all seriousness, yes, before someone sends me another explanation of why this post is idiotic and i’m encouraging the death of all native species, i am completely aware of the problems some of the birds on the list cause. i’m very aware they are invasive, disturb native birds, etc.
these birds also have great qualities. starlings are incredibly intelligent and can learn to mimic words. pigeons were cherished by people for years before they fell out of fashion and became ‘pests’. they were used in war as message carriers; some pigeons even received medals from the british and french governments. the aggressive behavior of geese is part of why they’re such great parents; they won’t allow anything or anyone to harm their babies.
something else i know is that hating them accomplishes absolutely nothing. these birds often have occupied the places they are invasive to for hundreds of years. in the case of the house sparrow, there have been attempts to eradicate them that just…fail. these birds have sheer numbers and are great at surviving. hating them won’t make them go anywhere. so don’t be a jerk to them if you see them on the street! don’t kick a pigeon or throw stuff at geese. just move along and leave them to do their own thing! that was the only point of the post. they have no fault in being invasive. we introduced them; we can take responsibility for their impacts on native ecosystems.
instead of being mad at birds that aren’t leaving, do some things to help your native birds. put out nest boxes, invest in feeders that are inaccessible to large invasive birds, make your windows visible to birds.
essentially, what i’m trying to say is; they are all really good birds.
the irony of this is that this was a joke in itself genius.
if you have to explain it’s a joke it probably wasn’t that funny
Says the dude who had to explain his shit post about invasive birds. Don’t contradict yourself.
you’re right! it was a dumb post that was meant all in good fun.
As was my comment so idk why you’re getting upset over something so trivial on a post that was obviously going to be controversial in the first place
it. it was a joke. just as clearly you had no intention to shoot me, my addition to the screenshot of your comment was not serious.

Bird no. 314. Lettum stare.

It turns out (for the most part) that it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Even if they ARE looking, they can really only see the parts of themselves that are reflected in you, for better or for worse. We all look at the world through lenses haphazardly crafted by a lifetime of experiences… and you have no control over what that is for other people, especially strangers.

I hope you lift someone up today, and that maybe you might lift up yourself in the process ❤️

This is Ecco! Her favourite things include sunbathing, having baths and prying things open with her beak. She also talks a lot, she can say her name, “whatcha doing?” and she also likes to mimic people coughing and the noises the other birds make.
