Goliath Heron
The Goliath heron (Ardea goliath), also known as the giant heron, is a very large wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae. It is found in sub-Saharan Africa, with smaller numbers in Southwest and South Asia. This is the world’s largest heron. The height is 4-5 feet, the wingspan is 6–7 ½ feet and the weight is 9–11 pounds. In flight it has a slow and rather ponderous look and, unlike some other herons, its legs are not held horizontally.Â
Welcome home to my new babies Eleanor and Rigby. 6 years of living in a tiny empty cage together. They learned to take out their stress and boredom by plucking each others’ feathers out, and their own to a lesser degree.. They may never grow back due to follicle damage.Â
They need a lot of work. Nail trims, beak trims, and a ton of TLC. They do not trust humans even remotely, can’t blame them.Â
This is why you don’t impulse buy birds. If you don’t realize how much enrichment they need, and how expensive it can be to keep up with their needs, and you fall behind.. This is what happens. Self mutilation out of extreme stress, depression, and boredom. But anyway, they’re here now and I will do my best to spoil them with healthy food and freedom. Once they’re through a month of quarantine, they will move to the bird room and have their cage doors open for 12 hours a day.Â
Massachusetts here.
This was in my backyard. It was high, high up in a tree and was absolutely huge. It does not look like a wild turkey or a turkey vulture due to the fact that the size, coloring, and the long neck do not match to those two birds. Any clue?
This is a Wild Turkey
