Raptors were a big draw on our Panama trips this year. Harpy Eagle and Crested Eagle were both on territory, and we enjoyed staggering numbers of migrant raptors flying overhead also. But here we feature some smaller, more colourful companions from Rockjumper’s just concluded Panama – Darién Extension. A Green Shrike-Vireo out in the open (!), a Golden-collared Manakin near a lek, and a Snowy-bellied Hummingbird resting by our lunch spot.

Kanina is a sweet lovebird who wants a family to belong to. She is good natured and sweet-tempered. Baths are a favorite activity, along with swinging from headphones and looking at her self in a phone. She is a good flyer so it would be ideal for her to be able to keep her wing feathers so she remains in good health, active and strong self-confidence. Kanina gets along well with cockatiels and other lovebirds with proper introductions and supervision.
Want to see about bringing Kanina into your flock? You can find our adoption application here: http://papayagorescuehouse.org/adoptables/
Can’t bring her home? Kanina is an avid toy chewer and could use some support while she is continuing her wait to find her own home. Please consider donating directly to Kanina via her Amazon WishList! https://smile.amazon.com/gp/registry/giftlist/22NM3O78R6FCN…

a baby blue jay flew onto my mom this morning, cue a 10 minute phonecall of me reassuring her it’s a fledgling and doesn’t need helping, especially when being swooped by its parents
Cher Ami, which means “dear friend” in French, was a pigeon that became famous during World War I for its tenacity and the fact that it saved the lives of many French soldiers by carrying a message across enemy lines. Cher Ami was shot in the chest and leg – losing most of the leg to which its message was attached – but continued the half hour-long flight anyway, avoiding shrapnel and poison gas to deliver its message. Cher Ami was awarded the French Croix de Guerre, meaning “Cross of War” in French, for heroic service.
Happy birthday, random-keyboard-smash! Hope you liked this literally one single thing that I already knew about pigeons.
