the saffron toucanet is a relatively small member of the toucan family native to rainforests of south america. toucanets are smaller than toucans and have a relatively smaller beak. the saffron toucanet is named for its cheery yellow head and chest. like other toucans, the saffron toucanet feeds on fruit and occasionally insects and small animals.

the keel-billed toucan is native to south america, and is one of the largest toucans, with one of the most colorful bills in the family. they are also one of the most well-known toucan species, with many depictions in pop culture. despite their large bills which are threatening in appearance, toucans only occasionally eat meat, and tend to prefer a diet of fruit.

baby toucans are just. beaks and feet with a side of body. they look like if someone gently rested half of a banana on top of a birds face, made the birds toes 90% larger, and called it a day

the toco toucan is the world’s largest species of toucan, native to south america. it’s large beak is actually very light, and is made up of hollow bone and keratin. the toco toucan’s beak makes up around half of the bird’s body size. this extraordinarily large beak is used to collect multiple fruits without having to reach to grab them, as well as being able to access foods other birds can’t.

call for submissions!

hi everyone! @todaysbird is in need of submissions! my goal is to post one bird a day to familiarize people with new species, put names to species people may ‘know’ but not know how to identify, and overall just make people smile with cute birds + bring people to love species they may not have cared about before! however, this blog relies on submissions and my own photos. i just don’t have access to that many birds very often – sure i have backyard birds, but i can’t get great photos without disturbing them, and people only want to see the budgies at my local petco so many times. that’s why i rely on you! i would REALLY appreciate submissions of any bird to this blog. your bird, a bird you saw outside, a rescue bird, anything as long as it’s YOUR photo. thank you!! 🙂
