bird of the day: the common bronzewing

many people think members of the pigeon family are dull, uninteresting birds. this is one of the birds that will change your mind.

the common bronzewing is a medium sized pigeon native to australia. both the male and female share the incredibly colored plumage, which in the right lighting is bronze, giving them their name. however, males can be distinguished from females by their yellow forehead and pink breast. young birds typically do not obtain the bright plumage until their first molt. common bronzewings are adaptable and are able to survive in almost any habitat, something that likely contributes to them being one of australia’s most common pigeons.
