lorikeets are just so beautiful and interesting!

the blue lorikeet (vini peruviana) is a small, stout lorikeet native to french polynesia and the cook islands. they usually live in mixed stands of trees including coconut, which they feed on the nectar and pollen of. the blue lorikeet’s diet also includes other nectar, flowers, small insects, and fruit. the blue lorikeet tends to live in small flocks of around ten. they are active mainly during the morning and evening, avoiding the heat of the day.

unfortunately, the blue lorikeet is now classified as vulnerable. this is mostly due to invasive species taking over the islands they are native to and preying on them. the main problem species are black rats and feral cats, both introduced by humans. they are also threatened by hunting and habitat loss. today, these beautiful birds only inhabit 9 of the 24 islands they once lived on. the global population estimate for the blue lorikeet is between 7,200 and 9,000 individuals. let’s wish the best for these beautiful parrots!
