bird of the day: crested pigeon

the crested pigeon is a medium-sized pigeon (around twelve inches in length) that is native to australia. while their coloration is similar to several other species, they are one of only two species of pigeon in australia with a distinct upright crest.

this pigeon is mainly grainivorous, though they also feed off of berries and insects (and will accept human food, in urban populations). while they sometimes feed off of grain crops, they are generally regarded as more helpful than harmful, as they feed on the salvation jane weed.

male and female crested pigeons are not sexually dimorphic, though they can be told apart by breeding behavior. males spread their tail and fan their wings and participate in an elaborate mating dance for females.

crested pigeons tend to live in small flocks, though flock size can vary and is typically larger in urban environments.

unlike most birds, crested pigeons have seemed to benefit from development, as they have so far thrived in urban environments, much like rock doves.
