the naked neck is a breed of domestic chicken originating from transylvania. long called the “turken” and thought to be a hybrid between a chicken and turkey, these birds are just chickens with a gene that causes overproduction of a feather-blocking hormone. despite their featherless necks, they are known for being surprisingly hardy in all kinds of environments.

the gray junglefowl is a medium-sized gallinaceous bird found in india. though the red junglefowl is often credited as the sole ancestor of domestic chickens, both gray and green junglefowl also played a role. the gray junglefowl provided the gene for yellow legs seen in domestic chickens today. much like chickens, gray junglefowl forage on the ground for seeds, insects, and berries in small flocks.

the green junglefowl is a member of the pheasant family native to asia. though it was once thought domestic chickens only originated from the red junglefowl, genetic testing found that the green junglefowl also played a lesser role. much like more well-known domestic chickens, junglefowl live in small flocks dominated by one male.
