seasonal reminder that the fruit & seeds of pumpkins is great for both pet and wild birds! so if you don’t eat pumpkin yourself, your bird friends will really appreciate it! (but please don’t give moldy or rotting pumpkins that have been sitting on your porch, or salted pumpkin seeds – birds cannot process salt like we do!)

the bali myna is a small, crested member of the starling family, endemic to bali. the bali myna is critically endangered – it is estimated there are less than 100 left in the wild. there have been attempts to reintroduce birds to the wild, but the mynas fetch high prices in captivity, and they are usually poached.

this green heron was spotted successfully using bread as fishing bait. it’s suggested this behavior may have been learned from watching nearby people fishing. crows, seagulls, and other birds have also been documented using bait to catch fish.


humans are not the only ones capable of giving and recognizing names -researchers have found parrots can as well. parrots are given distinct vocalizations as names – it’s believed their parents name them – and keep these names for life. they learn the names of others in their flock, and use them in ‘conversation’ with others.
