the european turtle dove is native to europe and parts of asia, with a wintering range in africa. they feed in flocks on the ground in open forests, mainly on seeds of plants considered weeds. turtle-doves are known for their mention in the popular ‘12 days of christmas’ song. the european turtle-dove faces threats from habitat destruction, new farming practices, and overhunting.

todays birds are: these budgies!
the takahe (porpyhyrio hochstetteri) is a large member of the rail family native to small, predator-free islands of new zealand. takahe are flightless, and are similar in coloration to the related pukeko but have a large, blocky beak and thicker legs. they feed mainly on grasses, shoots, and leaves, sometimes facing competition from red deer, which graze on these plants.

it’s bird time
todays bird is: beanie baby (bean or baby for short) the albino fischer’s lovebird!
the hill partridge is a member of the pheasant family native to asia, from the himalayas to vietnam. female hill partridges have duller colors and are smaller than the males. hill partridges live in small groups called coveys and forage in leaf litter for seeds and small insects.

hmm…i admittedly know more about species than breeds. some of my favorites are:
archangel
love the metallic sheen of the feathers!! my favorite colors are black-winged copper and full black
barb
any color…i love their funky eye rings, they look like the centers of daffodils. i don’t necessarily encourage their breeding, much like pugs, but they’re lovely nonetheless.

my favorite color is probably brown and white or silver and white. very aesthetically pleasing birds altogether though
