zygodactyl: two toes forward, two toes back
heterodactyl: similar to zygodactyl, but the third and fourth digits face forward instead. found only in trogons!
pamprodactyl: ALL four toes face forward!
zygodactyl toes, like on this hooded parrot, are great for picking up food and climbing
here’s an amazonian trogon with heterodactyl toes
swifts, all of which have pamprodactyl feet, can only grasp onto things vertically, meaning they cannot perch like other birds. this works out for birds like this black swift, because they tend to make their nests in cliffs, barns and other locations where there are steep walls, and spend much of the rest of their life in flight.
