the atlantic canary (also known as ‘island canary’, ‘wild canary’ or just ‘canary’) is a small member of the finch family named for the canary islands, where it is native. while domestic canaries are from this species, they are very different from wild atlantic canaries; atlantic canaries are 3.9-4.7 inches in length, while domestic canaries are typically around 5 and sometimes as many as 8 inches. along with that, the wild canary has streaked brown and greenish markings that most domestic canaries do not have. atlantic canaries are social birds that live in flocks of 5 to 30 birds, foraging for grass seeds together.
they tend to do better and be less lonely if there’s multiple, but if your bird is an adult you need to be careful and slow with an introduction. for now make sure your little guy has plenty of toys – most bird toys are designed for hookbills like parrots, but some canaries and finches really love swings, ladders, and other toys they can actually use!
Todays bird is: grass parakeets! (Turquosine w/ some splendid to be exact) featuring some canaries

hmm…admittedly i don’t have a lot of experience with that. id try adding cayenne pepper to the food. it doesn’t bother birds’ weak taste buds but it will generally deter mammals. it’s worked pretty well for squirrels at my house, not sure about rats however, they’ve never really gone to my feeders
